ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

PANELISTS

Joseph Wolfgram, IT Director
Overlake Hospital

Joseph is the Technology Director for Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue, WA. Joseph’s tenure in IT dates back to the mid-1980’s working such roles as Programmer Analyst, System Architect, Network Engineer, Program Manager, Help Desk Director, and CIO. Joseph also has 12 years of service within Higher Education, including 6 years as IT Director for the University of Washington School of Medicine. Other career highlights include founding a software company in 1991, as well as establishing and directing the IT organization for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a $35B charitable organization based in Seattle. Most recently Joseph has led healthcare projects in network infrastructure replacement, constructing and virtualizing medical-grade data centers, and integration of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure for clinical workflow improvements.

Ernie Hood, Former VP of IT
Group Health Cooperative

Ernie Hood former VP of IT at Group Health Cooperative, one of the nation’s largest consumer-governed health care systems. He has worked in information services for 30 years and the health care industry for 19 years.  In his role as CIO, he successfully implemented leading-edge technology solutions that increased the quality of care, improved patient outcomes, and lowered costs. His focus has been to seamlessly integrate information technology with the work and goals of the organization. Group Health is well known for one shining example of this approach, its leading-edge patient portal, MyGroupHealth, which was one of the first to enable patients to email their doctor and get their lab results online. Patients also use this website to order their prescriptions, make appointments, and even view their medical records. Connecting these features to the normal practice of medicine helped Group Health to earn a JD Powers Award in 2008 and 2010 and to become one of the most highly rated health plans in the country.

As a consumer governed organization, Group Health has eagerly embraced the Lean movement in Health Care. Hood, seeing this as a perfect fit with his strategy to seamlessly integrate technology in the processes of the organization, was among the first to apply these techniques to information services.

In 2010, Hood took on a new mission to encourage the effective use and integration of information technology throughout the Health Care industry. To that end he has taken on new roles in the Washington State Health Care community to enable the adaption of electronic medical records and the exchange of health information so that medical records can be available wherever the patient seeks care. He plans to apply the same concept of seamless technology and process integration in his new roles with WIREC, the lead organization for enabling the adoption of electronic medical records in Washington and Idaho and with OneHealthPort, the organization designated by the State to enable health information exchange.

Education has been a passion for Hood who has been a lecturer in the Health Information Management Program at Bellevue College since 2009 and has supported education and knowledge sharing through the Washington chapter of the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS). Hood has served on the Board of HIMSS Washington since 2005 and was elected president in 2010.

He is a graduate of the University of California and holds an M.B.A from the University of Houston.

His projects have included web program management, interim IT leadership, knowledge management, portal and collaboration solutions and IT infrastructure. David enjoys spending his free time with his family and playing in local volleyball leagues.

Katy Hewitson
Community Manager, Seattle
Yelp.com

Katy Hewitson, originally a native of the Bay Area in California, moved to Seattle 4 years ago to work in the marketing department for a local board game company. After graduating from college at Sonoma State University with a degree in Sociology, she found herself working and living in Seattle, almost 1000 miles from home. Not knowing much about the city of Seattle, she found Yelp.com! Reading and writing reviews about her experiences really helped her to familiarize herself with this beautiful city. Before long she was a Yelp Elite member attending all sorts of cool social gatherings and meeting other local people. Although many people think of Yelp as a business review site, it's so much more than that! There'a a strong social networking aspect to the site that allows people to connect with each other both on and offline. An opportunity arose for Katy to apply for the position of Yelp Community Manager in Seattle... and here she is, planning events, working with local media, communicating with business owners, and encouraging online users to meet offline and shop, eat, and buy local!
